Ring of Honor book Gabe Sapolsky was a guest on Dave Meltzer’s Wrestling Observer Live radio show Sunday night. Here are some notes from the interview:
- Sapolsky was pleased with the first ROH PPV taping. He said the show established what the product is all about.
- Sapolsky put over the Manhatten, NY crowd and said it was one of the best he had ever seen.
- He said the show lasted about four hours, and would be edited down to two hours for PPV. Matches that are expected to be on the PPV include the main event, Whitmer-Morishima, Romeo-Marufuji, and Delirious-Strong.
- Gabe said the original idea was to feature five matches on the debut PPV.
- Gabe said the main idea behind running PPVs is further exposure for the ROH product. The goal is to attract new fans, that may have never seen a ROH show or purchased a DVD.
- He said the next PPV probably won’t be taped at one venue as it slows down the production of the DVD. Sapolsky said ROH is dependant on DVD sales.
- Gabe said Bryan Danielson’s shoulder is pain free, but he still can’t lift a lot of weight.
- Gabe said most of the key ROH talent have signed contracts, which he believes is a bigger story for ROH than landing a PPV distribution deal.
- He said it was inevitable that TNA talent would be phased out of the product.
- Sapolsky said ROH is hoping Austin Aries gains his TNA release.
- He said Nigel McGuinness was banged up going into his match Saturday night.
- Gabe said he is looking forward to working with such international talent as Ricky Marvin.
- He said the promo cut by Homicide won’t ever be released on DVD or on the internet.
- Gabe said TNA never wanted Kurt Angle to work for ROH.
- Sapolsky said ROH is in a bit of a transition for talent, after recently losing Samoa Joe, Christopher Daniels, Homicide, etc. Gabe is excited to feature untapped talent on the roster.
- Gabe said ROH going to PPV doesn’t change the company’s philosophical direction.
- Gabe said James Gibson was a guy that wanted to come to ROH to show everyone he could work good matches.
